Just last week, iHemp Michigan hosted a media roundtable in Lansing with a single, crucial goal: to bridge the gap between the press and the people on the front lines of our state's brand-new industrial hemp industry. We brought together the growers, the processors, the innovators, and the retailers to share their stories, challenges, and incredible optimism.
We are thrilled to see the first story from that event published, and it's a fantastic piece by Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press.
In her article, "Thousands of acres of hemp being legally harvested in Michigan for the first time," Gray captures the energy of this pivotal moment. She highlights the sheer scale of this first harvest—with 572 growers and plans for over 32,000 acres—and the staggering economic potential that has farmers so excited.
We were proud to have our vice president, Dave Crabill, articulate the broad vision that iHemp Michigan stands for:
"We see an opportunity to truly scale the plant to produce CBD and the fibers from the hemp plant."
This is about more than just one product. It's about building a sustainable, "whole plant" industry. It's about using hemp fibers for building materials and textiles, creating biodegradable plastics, and developing nutritious food products. The article brilliantly features entrepreneurs who are already turning this vision into reality, from CBD processors who found personal healing through the plant to innovators turning hemp waste into eco-friendly materials.
This is the story we wanted to tell. This is the story of Michigan's next great agricultural chapter.
Our sincere thanks to Kathleen Gray and the Detroit Free Press for this thorough and insightful report. The work to educate, inform, and promote our industry is just beginning.
