MDARD to Send the Industrial Hemp Program back to USDA

October 16, 2024

Michigan House Bill number 5977 would change the Industrial Hemp Program for Michigan growers.

However, it does not change the requirements for Industrial Hemp Processors.

While the wording in this Bill does not state the request to abolish the Michigan Industrial Hemp program, it does state that “On February 1, 2025, the industrial hemp fund is abolished and any unencumbered balance in the industrial hemp fund at that time must be transferred to the agriculture licensing and inspection fees fund created under section 9 of the insect pest and plant disease act, 1931 PA 189, MCL 286.209.”

iHemp Michigan has confirmed that the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) will be requesting the Industrial Hemp program for Michigan Industrial Hemp Growers be abolished and returned to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for program administration.

iHemp Michigan will continue working with Michigan Regulators and MDARD on the details and how this will affect Michigan Industrial Hemp Growers.
