While the rest of you stoners have been drooling over the dawning era of legal weed, Michigan’s hemp farmers just pulled their first legal crop of cannabis’ sober first cousin. And they have big plans for the future.
“People say you can just cast your seed on the ground and this stuff is going to grow, that it will grow like a weed, for all intents and purposes, you don’t have to do anything. Most of those things are a misnomer and misinformation when you are looking at producing this crop for a commercial endeavor,” said David CONNER of the Paw Paw Hemp Company. He was speaking today at a media roundtable sponsored by iHemp Michigan, an organization of growers and processors.
“Michigan is ready to be a national player in the industrial hemp products market,” said David Crabill, iHemp communications director. “Michigan is a farming state with a rich manufacturing history, so it was no surprise this year that we saw farmers and entrepreneurs jump at the opportunity to get into industrial hemp around the state.”

Hemp Farmers Working Through First Michigan Harvest
Hundreds of growers participating in the state’s hemp pilot program are starting the physically demanding harvest process where most of the profit could come from the flower, which is used for CBD products that have blown up in popularity during the last year especially.

A small group of about twenty gathered in Lapeer to discuss industrial hemp. Special thanks to John who cooked hemp heart encrusted chicken, potatoes, roasted vegetables and apple fritter type of dessert! We did more than enjoy the food though. Dave discussed the who, what, where, when and why of industrial hemp and a special guest, Valorie Aloisio, of Hemp Lifestyle Network provided detailed information about the role of the Endocannabinoid System in restoring balance to the Endocrine System with the use of cannabidiol.
